I suspect Turk might be a bit suspicious of Sebo considering his current dress--don't know if he'd actually know much about Marcello right off. I don't suspect that people would considering he's not a big nation like everyone else... Might be nice to see how they'd interact and work things out...well, if they can work things out.

Sooooo... I was finally doing some detailed research about Kosovo's history and it turks* out that Kosovo and Turkey (or Kosovo and Ottoman Empire, at any rate) have had all kinds of history. Something ought to be made of this!

So, tell me of this history of Kosovo and Turkey, I'm highly interested~

You asked for it; you got it. Prepare for infodump; my Kosomuse LOVES talking about this. Probably because it's very exciting and also comprises the majority of his history.

Historical Background

Until the early 15th century of the Common Era, the region known both then and now as Kosovo was historically important only as the center of a certain Serbian empire that was subjugated along with the rest of the Balkan Peninsula when the Ottoman Empire came through. There was a huge battle in 1389 (Serbs vs. Ottomans) at the field Kosovo's name is taken from that decided the fate of the region; the Serbs technically won, but nearly everybody who showed up on both sides was killed and the Ottomans took over anyway because they hadn't sent their entire strength.

So Kosovo belonged to the Ottoman Empire from 1455 until 1912, and a lot happened during that time, some of which people are still having very high-stakes debates over. A few highlights of what's known for definite historical fact:

• On multiple occasions, Kosovo was the center of an anti-Ottoman rebellion
• In 1864, Kosovo became its own province within the empire
• Ottoman censuses mostly paid attention to religious demographics; over time, the majority religion in Kosovo shifted from Christian to Muslim, in response to significant societal and economic pressure to convert
• One manifestation of this pressure was the practice of extracting a tax in the form of young boys from Balkan Christians, in order to populate the Janissary corps

My Personal Headcanons

Like I said, this is one of Kosomuse's favorite things, so of course I have headcanons. He pounced on this history as soon as I started learning about it, and got pretty elaborate.
All that history was basically his childhood. He was very young during the Battle of Kosovo Field, and (as far as nation-time goes) doesn't remember much further back than that. He'd have you believe (or, in other words, I'd love to play it off in this way if possible) that he was one of those little Christian boys who were taken to be trained for soldiers or administrators, and so a certain part of his youth was spent learning there. He never grew up enough to be a proper soldier (in fact, he's still too little a couple hundred years later), but he got an education in between rebellions.

So, yeah, that's the abridged version. More recent history isn't nearly so exciting--Kosovo and Turkey basically get along. But I find this older history to be very interesting for stuff to... stuff. I've been working on writing all this long enough that I'm about to fall asleep, so apologies if it isn't all perfectly coherent.
