There was once a man who dared to deal with the devil himself. The man had been a farmer, but after three years of poor harvest and drought, the man was dealing with poverty and the bank was threatening to take his land if he didn't pay soon. Desperate, the man waited at a set of crossroads until the devil appeared ad together they made a deal. The deal was that Jack, the farmer, would sell his soul to the devil in exchange for fortune and prosperity with his farm. However, Jackie was as cunning as the devil. He asked the devil to hold his last coin while he signed the agreement. As soon as the coin touched the skin of the devil, the lord of Hell screamed out in pain. The metal had been soaked in holy water and the cross had been burned into both sides.
The devil could not remove the coin himself from his hand and so, he became Jack's prisoner. Jack said he would release the devil only if he granted not only the original agreement, but also that he would not take his soul. The devil begrudgingly agreed, the coin was removed, the devil disappeared laughing, and Jack lived the rest of his greedy life in pleasure. The man died at a ripe old age, but because his life was too full of sin, he could not enter Paradise, and because the devil had promised not to take his soul either, he was barred from hell as well. His soul roamed aimlessly across the lands, blind and dark, as his soul had no light thus was nothing more than a wondering shade.
Desperate once more, he called out to the devil for salvation, who answered and appeared before him. The devil, a being of his word, promised that he would give Jack light if only he would open his mouth willingly and swallow whatever was placed inside. Jack agreed and opened his mouth and the devil took an ember from the pit of hell and placed it into Jackie’s mouth, who swallowed it. In a fit of pain, the ex-farmer screamed and light filled his body, hot, agonizing light. Additionally, as an act of revenge the devil transformed Jack’s head into a pumpkin and cursed him to carry a lantern, fueled by his own fire, for eternity. The devil said that if Jack ever could find him, he would gain entrance to hell. Doomed, Jack wonders through the night, trying to find the devil once more, but the devil thrives in the shadows and Jack is cursed to be the creator of shadows from his firelight, but he can never be in them himself.
Through his wonderings, Jack of the Lantern, or Jack O’Lantern, was drawn to the pull of the Baudeau Manor, and became trapped. He still is trying to find the devil, but finds that killing whomever he’s ordered to satisfies his personal burn for revenge, if only for a while. Jackie’s killing style is fire. One touch from him will burn anyone seriously and if he is able to wrap his arms around a person in an embrace, said person will ignite and burn until they are ashes. Jack’s only weakness is his fire of hell, his fuel of his soul’s existence, his lantern. Destroy the lantern, and you destroy Jack.
