Well, this is bizarre, thought Augustus as he looked down to find his hands had been attached together by means of handcuffs. Really, he supposed that he should have reacted with at least a somewhat more shocked expression, perhaps one of indignation, but for whatever reason all he could think of at the moment was the unmistakable comedy of the situation, the utter ridiculousness of it, and the fact that he had no idea how he had gotten himself both into that situation and into this underground cave in the first place. If he hadn't known better, he might have even guessed drinking was involved, but he wasn't that stupid in the first place, not when there were more important matters at hand.
”I didn't know you had a sense of humor,” he practically growled, looking up at the ceiling. Augustus could swear there was someone now laughing at him for the predicament he had woken up into. He wasn't fixing it anytime soon. Whatever had put him there (and he couldn't remember that either, much to his chagrin) had felt the need to once again separate him from whoever he was with at the moment and to drop him here. His hands, at least, weren't actually cuffed around anything else, but he wasn't going to be moving them properly for some time. The cuffs somehow fit perfectly, so he wasn't going to be sliding out of them. He also wasn't stupid enough to leave where he had been put quite yet. He wasn't going to fight anything with his movement impaired if he could help it.
Instead, he decided to take a look around the place he was now sitting, catalog it in his brain for future reference. The most important thing was the glimmering, crystal clear lake in the middle. Maybe it was a source of safe water. It certainly didn't look contaminated, though he supposed it might be. The lake seemed almost illuminated from below, casting an eerie light across the room, a deep greenish glow that made the place seem like some old, fanciful place one of the Romantics might right of, a cavern hidden somewhere. It felt as though it came from a fairy tale- or perhaps the nightmare accompanying it. Most fairy tales Augustus knew weren't exactly light and airy.
He supposed he was stuck until he was either found by something or found by someone, then. Augustus stood up and then leaned back, ready for the long wait. He was still unnerved by the light the underground lake was casting. Perhaps he should move. After all, he didn't know who had placed him in that cavern, and for all he knew he had been cuffed to make him some sort of lamb for the slaughter, a treat for the beast. Then again, if he moved, he might be in more danger. It would make it less likely for him to be found, and his balance would be harder to regain should anything happen that caused him to fall. He thought for a moment. He didn't even know how he had gotten to where he was, so he certainly didn't know how to get out. He risked just getting more lost.
Suddenly, Augustus heard a noise, and he tensed up, praying it was not some sort of monster.
