Scanning the hall closely before slowly rounding the corner, Sweden leveled his spear at his waist cautiously. After all, one couldn't be too prepared in this hell hole. Placing his feet carefully on the floorboards, he cringed slightly whenever they creaked below him, hinting at his location in the darkness.
Feeling around for the wall he stiffened when his hand brushed against something cold to the touch, yanking his hand away. Taking a moment to position himself in case of a surprise attack, he reached forward and fumbled around until his fingers brushed against the same surface. After a moment of contemplation he realized it was only a doorknob and mentally berated himself for freaking out. Tightening his hand around the doorknob, he slowly turned until a signifying click was heard before pulling open the door quickly and walking in, hoping he didn't just walk into his own funeral.
Holding his breath and listening with every fiber of his being, he finally released it with relief flooding his body. He was alone. Turning and pulling the door closed, he set aside his spear and stripped off his overcoat before kneeling and stuffing it under the door before straightening. Holding his hands out in front of himself, he used them to look for the light switch. Holding back a growl of frustration when he didn't, he turned and leaned against the wall, sliding down in exhaustion.
Blinding light flared through the room, causing Sweden to close his eyes and cover them with his hands. Waiting then slowly blinking his eyes open, he glanced around. The room itself was fairly large, fitted with a desk and several small couches with a wall of books on one side.
Pushing himself from the ground and dusting off his pants, the ground seemed to shift under him. Stumbling forward and reaching for something, anything, to hold himself up, he foundered and crashed to the floor as his vision swam before fading into blackness.

Tino slammed against the wall of the corridor, using his arms to launch himself down the hallway as his legs hammered beneath his lithe body. He could practically feel the wind off the beast as it mirrored his path, snarling through its two pronounced teeth. The Sabre barrelled after the man, led by Tino's loud footsteps and laboured breathing.
Fire burned deep in Tino's chest as he panicked, desperately trying to escape the monster that pursued him. This hall was darker than the last; the lightbulb above must have burnt out. That only ensured a bad ending for Finland, as the creature that was chasing him was blind. Though, in this light, Tino saw the glimmer of something shiny up ahead. A doorknob. He raced up to the door on his left and made the split second decision to take it, as the monstrous cat was only a meter or two behind him. If it were locked, Tino's life would end. If it were open, he might escape Death's cold clutches. Reaching the brassy knob, Tino snapped his wrist to the side and thank god, the door wasn't locked. Leaping inside, Tino barely had time to slam the wooden blockade shut before a massive weight lurched against the wood. Letting out a pained grunt, Tino heaved back on the door and managed to click it shut. The beast behind it though, continued to angrily bash against the obstacle. Tino's violet gaze snapped to the hinges. If they didn't hold...
Turning on a time, Tino frantically ran deeper into the room, only to smack against something. Wheezing hard, the Finn felt around, pulling some object out onto his hands. He heard the rustling of paper and stopped for a moment. Feeling the strange item in his hands, Tino quickly established that he had found himself a book. Tossing it to the ground, Tino felt around and discovered more. A bookcase?
Another slam against the door shook Tino from his findings. Gripping the shelves, Tino blindly climbed shelf after shelf until he reached the top of the of the ancient bookcase. If the cat got in... then maybe he'd stand a chance by staying out of its reach. Holding his breath as he clenched his feeble butter knife in his hands, Tino's eyes strained to find the door. It was very, very dark in this room and he wasn't exactly about to try and find a light. Tino waited, still as stone as he silenced his hard breath and stilled his heartbeat. Pressing his chest to the dusty surface, he listened.
The banging soon ended as the monster seemed to lose interest. Tino still didn't move though. His eyes were closed and his breathing had melted into the still air of the room. He wanted to be absolutely positive that nothing else was in here. Then and only then would he clamber down, drag something heavy over to blockade the door, and find a light.
Minutes ticked away as Tino's mind strained to hear the slightest of sounds. He was slowly learning the Manor's tricks and suspected that it was playing with him and placed some danger in this room. That, or Tino's sanity had been pulled tight over his fraying mind. Inhaling slowly, Tino opened his eyes and looked around. His violet orbs had adjusted to the darkness, but not enough for him to see clear images. He could only see darker shadows, which he assumed to be other bookshelves or something. Making the motion to sit up, Tino stopped when he heard something click.
Wars had taught Tino that freezing got you killed. He sank back to the top of the shelf, pressing his chest tightly against the wood. He edged himself forward, peering over the tip of the shelf at the dim door. It swung open and Tino tensed, ceasing his breathing. He could feel his heart hammering in his ears and prayed that whatever had entered couldn't hear it. Whoever was standing there had stopped as well, listening. Tino didn't move. He didn't swallow, he didn't shift, and he didn't allow his lungs to ventilate. He simply waited with strained eyes and ears.
After what seemed like hours, the body moved to close the door. Tino allowed his pent up breath to slowly seep from his nostrils. Controlled and completely silent, despite how much he wanted to gasp for oxygen. Tino waited, unsure of what this body wanted. He was fairly sure that he hadn't been detected, as it made no apparent motion towards his perch. He couldn't actually tell what the figure was doing over there, but he didn't want to find out. How could he get out of this room without being detected? The mysterious intruder was right beside the door. Tino chided himself for not scoping out a second exit, if there even was one.
Glancing back to the figure, Tino cocked his head to the side. There was... something familiar about the way that individual moved. Wait... no, it couldn't be! Tino sat up slightly, trying to get a better look before a burst of light attacked Tino's eyes. Withholding a gasp, Tino ducked back down and rubbed his poor face. Blinking away the blotchy stars, Tino's pupils quickly adjusted as he peeked back at the person standing in the doorway. It... it was!
Tino quickly sat up, exposing him from his hiding place as a grin pulled at his lips. He was about to call out to the familiar nation when the man's face suddenly paled and he collapsed forward onto the wooden floorboards with a heavy thump. “B-Berwald!” Tino quickly called, leaping forward without much thought. Tino regretted the rash action seconds later when his feet met the floor. Biting his lip as the impact surged up the bawls of his feet to his fingertips, Tino shook the pain off and dashed forward to the fallen body of his most trusted friend.
“Oh god, Berwald, are you okay? Please say something!” Tino said, panicking as he tried to roll the burly nation over to check for injuries.

He would be lying if he said darkness wasn't unpleasant. It wasn't like the darkness of the manor, the darkness that held unknown horrors and exploited your own. No, this darkness was simply... there. It certainly didn't comfort or protect or even offer a sense of security. It held him, not harshly or softly, and blanketed his every thought and masked his senses. If he thought about it this darkness was like what it felt like after dying on the battlefield before coming back to life. So, was he dead?
No, he would've remembered dying. Sleeping? Yeah that could be it. God only knows the last time he actually got any sleep since coming here. The real question, though, is where was he when it happened and what was he doing? He prayed he hadn't been sharpening his spear at the time; that could be nasty.
Think. What was the last thing he remembered? He could feel the strain of concentration send a cascade of needles to the base of his skull before he let the thoughts disappear. He never would've guessed thinking could ever hurt this much. Allowing his thoughts to drift off, peace settled within him and the darkness wound it's way around every fiber of his being.
"....ald......... Sa...... ometh..."
Twitching the corners of his mouth into a subtle frown, Sweden tried to brush away the buzzing sound in his ears. When it didn't fade but instead grew louder, he groaned and cracked his eyes open to slits. The second he did tendrils of darkness tore at him, ripping at every inch of his body. Panic soared through him as pain bloomed wherever the darkness touched. His skin was on fire and he could feel the darkness creeping up his body. Trying in vain to move, to thrash around and tear away the tendrils, he lay motionless save for the frantic twitching of his fingers. The burning sensation of the tendrils worked it's way up his body, across his chest and up towards his mouth that was desperately trying to open with a scream--
Flying up with a deafening roar, Sweden swung his arm out, fighting off the hands on him before shooting backwards. Flailing around wildly, he fumbled for his spear but came up empty. His eyes darted around before finding a figure in front of him, nothing more than a blurry figure to him without his glasses.
"Komma tillbaka och ange ditt namn. Nu!"

Tino didn't see any blood or ugly stains, which was a hopeful sign as Tino struggled to move the deadweight of his ally's body. What if Berwald had been chased by something prior to his entrance to the room? Had he been gravely injured? Was this the point where his body just couldn't take him any further? No. Tino had gone for many weeks in the haunted home, alone, convincing himself that Berwald was too stubborn to die before him. The Swede could not quit here. Tino wouldn't accept it. He wouldn't allow it. The Manor had taken so much from the Fin already. He couldn't bear to lose this. “B-Ber... c'mon. Sit up. I-I can't..” Tino started, but stopped when he saw the spastic twitching of a set of visible fingers. Tino paused, reaching to his friend's face to quickly brush the pale locks from his closed eyes. The man's glasses had popped off when he face planted, leaving his creased expression more prominent in the bright lighting.
“Berwald?”
A second later, Tino visibly cringed back as sound exploded within the room. A flailing arm lashed out at his hands, surprising the Fin more than anything. Regardless, the smack stung Tino's feelings more than his arms as the booming screech send Tino's already-tense body off. Scrambling backwards in alarm, Tino's wide violet eyes locked onto the clumsy, frantic body that was had darted away. The burly nation not only screamed at him, but pushed himself away until his body met the wall. Tino's heart simply pounded within his chest as he cowered back, frightened enough to be at the receiving end of Berwald's unexplained anger.
“Komma tillbaka och ange ditt name. Nu!”
The sentence was easily understood by Tino, as he was fluent in Swedish, but the meaning through him off. H-How did Berwald not recognize him?! Did... did he forget him already? Did the countless centuries of memories melt away in the short time that the Manor had encased them? Tino swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to wet his lips enough to speak. The first time he tried to babble a response, the words came out of empty, rasped air. Coughing quickly, Tino desperately tried again, this time in Swedish to hopefully jar his friend's mind.
“Berwald! Det är jag, Finland!” // Berwald! It's me, Finland!
Tino hesitated after the rushed outburst, staring into the Swede's turquoise glare. Seized with panic, Tino stayed stone still to see if Berwald's aggression ceased.

With his frantically beating heart mimicking that of a hummingbird's, Sweden took deep lungfulls of air to calm himself. His thoughts raced to match his pulse, flying by to make sense of his surroundings with his reduced eyesight. He could see the basic shapes and details of everything but little more. Perhaps if he focused harder he could find his spear...
"Bernwald! Det är jag, Finland!"
Freezing at the outburst, Sweden could only blink stupidly at the familiar voice coming from the figure. Finland? There was no mistaking it, that's for sure. He'd know that voice anywhere after all the time spent hearing it. But to honestly think he'd stumble upon a familiar face here of all places was impossible. But it did and that might be the one blessing this house might give him. If this wasn't a sick, twisted hallucination conjured up by his imagination that is. But here's to hoping for the best, right?
"Finland?" Pushing down the slight crack in his voice, from his earlier freak out, he narrowed his eyes in focus at him. "Is 't really you?"
Despite his overwhelming hope he couldn't immediately trust anyone for who they claimed they were. He needed to be careful and thoroughly examine every detail so he wasn't fooled. Which would much easier if he could actually see properly. Running his hands along the floor around himself in search of his glasses, he frowned when he came up empty. Well if they weren't by him then that meant they were where he fell when blacked out.
Letting out a huff and resigning himself to the inevitable outcome of his predicament, Sweden heaved himself up using the wall as a brace before staring down at the person he hoped to be Finland. Clearing his throat and standing tall, he fixed a fierce look on his face.
"I need m' glasses. Y' see th'm?"

“Finland? Is 't really you?”
Berwald's voice was shaky, and reminded Tino of a caged animal that had been offered water or something. Though the initial ferocity had been quelled, there was still warning as the Swede clearly seemed defensive. This only worried Tino further. Was the man injured somewhere and on the edge? Or had he simply been through hell and back? Tino wouldn't doubt it in this household. Still, the man was acting different from what Tino was used to, and that scared him. Had Berwald changed? Had the Manor taken his friend from him? Tino desperately hoped that it hadn't. Looking up at the Swede, Tino nodded with enthusiasm, trying to convey his message. Of course it was him! Did Finland have to jar the burly blond's memories?
Finland knew better than to push his boundaries with Sweden, but he was honestly concerned. Inching forward a tad, Tino's eyes were pulled from his friend as he felt some object brush his fingertips. Curiosity snapped up his attention as he stared at a small item, lost to what it was at first. A second ticked by before Tino actually examined the gadget. Oh... These were Berwald's glasses... Tino's face pulled into a small grimace. They must have gotten a little bent went the Swede capsized. Puffing out a breath to clear the dust from the lens, Tino could safely say that the glass component had thankfully remained in tact. The wire piece that hooked behind the ears though... it had seen better days. Using his small hands, Tino tried to gently work the crease out of the thin wire.
He wasn't aware that Berwald was mobile, nor did he notice the nation rise. Tino did however, lose his concentration when he heard the man clear his throat. He also happened to nearly shriek and skirt away ten feet when he looked up, but instead it came out as a shocked gasp and a heavy flinch. W-Why was Berwald looking at him that way!? Feeling awfully small crouched in front of the massive man, Tino slowly edged himself to his feet. Discomfort had nestled its way into Tino's stomach as he swallowed, catching the Swede's statement. The glasses...
“Um, yes, I see them. One second...” Tino said, using the hem of his shirt to clear away the dust and fingerprints that had marred the lens. Taking a few hesitant steps forward, Tino reached up to gently push the ocular device up on the bridge of the Nordic's nose. “S-Sorry, but I think they got a little bent when you fell... I tried to straighten them out, but you'll probably need to get a new pair when we get home.”

Leaning back slightly as Finland's hands came closer to his face, Sweden reached to grab them but stopped when he felt the familiar weight of his glasses. Stupefied, he looked down at Finland, the only indication of it being the slight widening of his eyes. If he was anywhere else he would have smacked himself for acting so stupid but right now he didn't really care.
Taking a closer look at his long time friend, he noticed he looked worse for wear. No surprise there. Actually, Sweden would be concerned if he didn't look bad. Not that he didn't look good or anything just tired and overworked. But all in all it was good to see him alright and out of harms way for now.
"Good t' see a familiar f'ce," running a hand through his hair, he nervously licked his lips before continuing, "Sorry f'r before. Didn't rec'gnize you."
Well he officially felt like an idiot. Must be how Danmark feels whenever he opens his mouth. Sweden couldn't makes things get anymore awkward even if he tried. He wasn't much of a people person before but now it was just painful. Maybe he could will himself into invisibility if he concentrated hard enough.
Sighing dejectedly, he leaned against the wall and slid down til his rear touched the floor. Bringing his knees up and resting a forearm on them, Sweden brought his other hand up to rub at his eyes. Tilting his has back and closing his eyes, he tried to push away the headache blooming at the base of his skull. What he wouldn't do for a painkiller right now.

Well... that could have gone worse. Tino had been a little nervous approaching the man, especially since he reacted so suspiciously to the Finn's voice. Swallowing as he waited for Berwald's reaction, he allow his hands to back off Berwald's face to fall to his sides. Again, he wanted to be careful with the guy's limits. No telling what he had gone through so far. Tino was relieved though when the Swede's reaction relaxed and lost a teensy bit of intensity. Well, it was still a little frightening, but nothing like before. Tino knew Berwald pretty well, and this was not a look of intentional intimidation. Though... Tino wasn't exactly what kind of expression it was. He simply blinked awkwardly as the Swede stared at him.
Sweden had the kind of gaze that made you uncomfortable if you didn't know him very well. Granted, Tino was best friends with the guy, but he hadn't seen him in what seemed like a lifetime. He hadn't been under that scrunched, unconscious glare for ages and it showed. Tino felt nervous, like he had centuries ago. Silence settled around them as Berwald continued to just.. stare. Tino bit his lip, unsure of what to actually say here. He was afraid of babbling right now, in case Berwald wasn't the same Berwald.
Finland was soon relieved of the task of talking as Sweden took up the job. His grumbled speech was just like it had always been, minus the frantic tone from before. Tino smiled at the apology, gently shaking his head back and forth. His overgrown locks slid into his eyesight, causing him to unconsciously swipe them to the side. “No, it's alright, you didn't have your glasses. Um... are you okay though? You passed out and you scared me there. Did you get hurt or...?” Tino started as the man slid down the wall, looking exhausted.
Concern littered Tino's expression as he crouched in front of the man, scanning him for any signs of physical pain. He hadn't limped, or shown any signs of favouring an area, which was reassuring. Still, Tino wanted to make sure. There had to be a reason for the man's sudden collapse. Exhaustion? Hunger? Thirst? Tino watched the male as he seemed to think something deep over. That... or he had a headache or something. “Berwald?” Tino pressed gently, peering up at the guy. He didn't want to seem annoying... but he wanted to help his Nordic friend out if he could.

Grunting and opening his eyes, Sweden was shocked to see Finland's face peering up at him. He sat up straight and looked at him. When did he move? He must really be losing his edge if he didn't notice that. Raising an eyebrow slightly, he stretched out his legs and moved over, trying to get comfortable.
"Hm? What's wrong?"
Taking a closer look he noticed the concern written on Finland's face. Was he really that worried? He must really look bad to warrant such a look along with inquiries about how he felt. Grimacing softly before looking down at himself, Sweden couldn't see anything to be worried about. After all he looked fine, right?
Well he did take that face plant earlier. Maybe his face was bleeding? Reaching up to run a hand over his face, he pulled it back to see it as spotless as before. If I'm not bleeding then why's Finland looking at me like that? Does he think I'm an illusion? No, if that was the case he wouldn't be so close. Then what?
Huffing in frustration, he rolled his shoulders before staring Finland in the eyes. No sense in beating around the bush when he could just ask.
"Is there s'mething wrong or on m' face?"
That wasn't so bad. Probably a little over dramatic with all the thought about it but whatever. No use crying over spilled milk. It could've been worse. Or not. Then again it was entirely possible considering who he was and his lack of actual verbal skills. But that's off topic. What mattered more right now was an answer from Finland. So, fixing all of his attention on the smaller man, he waited with an expectant look.

What's wrong? Nothing was currently ailing the Fin. Well... that wasn't exactly true. The Manor had taken its toll on the young Nordic nation, zapping some of the vibrant life from his eyes and the joy from his usual optimism. Though Tino was still the embodiment of Finland, he had changed. It was utterly impossible to remain the same gentle man that he had been before. There was too much danger and far too many risks. Tino was still rather happy to see Sweden, but there was obviously a less-than-subtle change in his usual demeanour.
Tino's eyes silently traced Berwald's stiff movements, watching the blond take in his current state. Berwald certainly looked alright, but then what had caused his sudden collapse? If Berwald wasn't clutching his back or limbs in pain, then Tino doubted that the man had suffered life-threatening injuries recently. Still, the concern must have still been sprawled across his features as Berwald's icy gaze rose, locking Tino's where it was.
“Is there s'mething wrong or on m' face?”
The statement caught Tino completely off guard. He expected Berwald to deny any claims towards his health, in all honesty. Instead, he got such a blunt and direct statement that left him close to speechless. The man was staring so intensely too, with his slightly crooked glasses after the silly question. The Fin's mouth popped open in shock ever so slightly for a second, before a raspy sound soon filled the air. Tino's eyes closed as he brought his hand to his face, trying to withhold the chuckles. Instead, they came out in full force as the small man laughed heartily.
“Ahahaha, Berwald...” Tino started, barely able to formulate words as he clutched his sides. The Manor had kept him on edge for so very long with such pressure and anxiety... to have Berwald unintentionally ask a question like that made the caged Fin cackle. It had been so long since he laughed last too...
Finally subsidizing his laughter, Tino wiped his face with his palms as he shook his head softly, trying to hold back a small smile. “No Berwald, there's nothing on your face but your glasses. I was just wondering why you suddenly lost consciousness.” The smile disappeared. “Have you slept recently? You look exhausted...”

Well........ That was unexpected. Refreshing but unexpected nonetheless. Hearing Finland laugh, however uncalled for, certainly put the Swede at ease. Actually, it made him want to laugh too. Had his laugh always been so infectious? Probably but the atmosphere of the manor made it more noticeable. Twitching the corners of his lips upwards ever so slightly, he let the sound of Finland's laughing ring in his ears.
Off on a little mental side trip, Sweden almost fell over when his companion questioned him about his sleeping patterns. He really hit the nail on the head with that one. Trying to cover his momentary shock with a cough, his eyes flickered off to the side momentarily before staring at the front of Finland's shirt. Play it cool. He's only assuming.
"What're y'talking about? 'M fine."
A sinking feeling settled in the pit of his stomach, tightening and loosening uncomfortably. God how he hated lying to Finland. In all the centuries they'd been friends Sweden had almost never lied to him; it went against his personal policies. And now here he was, doing exactly that. Even telling himself that it was to keep Finland from worrying pointlessly only made it worse. Curse his delicate conscious when dealing with Finland. Sometimes it just wasn't fair.
Stifling a pout and instead shaking his head, Sweden brushed his bangs from his face tiredly. No need to get worked up and make himself sick. He could just say that he hadn't slept in quite some time. But then again his pride wouldn't let him admit something was wrong to others or take back what he said no matter the consequences. Bad habits sure do die hard.
Actually, since he honestly didn't know how long they might be in here, he may as well start getting rid of those habits. It would prove how strong his will is to this bloody house and it's inhabitants. That's what he'll do! Prove himself a worthy opponent and a force to be reckoned with, pride be damned.
Steeling his nerves for the kickback of his actions, Sweden opened his mouth and let the words flow.
"But.... 'M sleepy."

Tino's sudden change of persona clearly threw Berwald off. Tino was the type of person that could do that though. His emotions could turn on a dime, and the trait was only enhanced with the paranoia from the Manor. Regardless, the surprised question had caught Sweden off guard. The slight widening of his icy eyes was an indication in itself, and the faked cough was only a cover-up. Finland had known the man long enough to realize that the way he broke eye contact and refused to reconnect it meant that he was uncomfortable.
Tino knew the Swede was lying, or was going to lie, even before the words had left his lips. 'So stubborn... honestly, I know you're a proud man, but you can admit you have a problem to me...' [/i] Tino thought silently as he stared ahead at the man. The burly male's body language only confirmed that the lie was hanging in the air, rearing its ugly head between them. The Swede was not fine. If anyone was 'fine' in this place, they'd be insane or dead. 'Fine' was certainly the last word Tino would use to describe either of them at the moment, but he played it off as Berwald trying to shoulder his own problems. Tino wasn't fairing much better as of late. He himself had seen his own array of horrors and carried his own emotional burdens. Perhaps he shouldn’t be so ready to chastise Berwald. Wasn't Tino doing the same by failing to indulge in his horrendous experiences. If Berwald asked... well, naturally, Tino would deny any poised problem as well. He couldn't blame the man. Finland watched the Swede's hand, following the man's fingers as they travelled to his face. Another gesture suggesting that Berwald had lied before. When the man lied, he tended to get fidgety. The casual action may have looked normal to any other country, but it was a practised tactic in Tino's eyes. He had to be tired... the dark circles under his friend's eyes only made the guy seem all the more frightening. Tino was about to press the issue once more, but Berwald somehow beat him to filling the air with sound. "But.... 'M sleepy." Finland nearly toppled back with surprise. Swede... was admitting fatigue. Not admitting to lying persay, but confessing that he wasn't 100% fine and that he did feel the need for rest. Tino felt a small smile tug as the corners of his lips as he repressed the urge to say 'See? Was that so hard?'. Placing his palms on his kneecaps, he pushed himself up and off the wooden floorboards. For once in his life, he had some temporary height on the massive man. “Well, how about this. Help me barricade the door with that bookcase, then you can get some shuteye on one of the couches. Sound alright?” Tino asked, offering the man a hand in case he needed a bit of help up. The Finn also wanted to be careful that Sweden didn't faint and capsize once more. Having his friend exhausted to the point of randomly collapsing was the last thing Tino wanted in a monster-infested mansion. ( Sorry for the wait >_< )[/blockquote]

Cranning his head to look Finland in the eye, Is this what it's like to talk to me? My God this must get annoying, Sweden contemplated his friend's offer. If he accepted he would get to sleep without worrying about being killed but he would be sacrificing time he could spend with Finland. But if he declined who knew when he might pass out, because only women faint.
Mulling over his options for a bit, he brought his left hand to his mouth and absently began biting his thumbnail. After the moment of deliberation, Sweden reached out his right arm to take the proffered hand directly in front of him. Feeling his stomach swarm with butterflies as he heaved himself up, Sweden fought against the heavy blush that flourished on his pale cheeks though rather unsuccessfully as it only became more noticeable.
Quickly releasing his grip on Finland's hand, Did I squeeze too hard?, he practically ran over to the bookcase. Subtly wiping his suddenly sweaty palms on his shirt, he glanced over the books and other items scattered on the shelves. There were miniature busts of unfamiliar people and a few photos that were too faded to be made out but that were likely of the same people.
They needed to move the bookcase, right? That wouldn't be too hard. Actually, looking the car up and down, it might be harder than he thought. It looked solid enough to barricade a door, perhaps for or five regular people would be needed to move it. And since Nations were much, much stronger than regular humans it should be a breeze with just the two of them. Except, y'know, the manor completely screwed with everything, including their strength.
Letting out a contemplative hum and placing a hand on his chin, he thought about how to begin moving the bookcase. Perhaps if one of them lifted the end closest to the door while the other other pushed they could do it. But then that raised the question of who did what. And what if neither of them were strong enough in the first place? Then what?
Looking over at his friend he took careful notice of his build. He didn't necessarily have the definition of people like Danmark or Holland but he wasn't scrawny either. However, when one looked close enough they could easily see the toned muscle he possessed and the way it flexed whenever he moved-
Stifling a cough as his face bloomed a brilliant red once again, he ceased his staring and turned to face his current objective. Right. How to deal with the bookcase.

Sooner than later, Tino felt the familiar warmth of Berwald's hand in his own as the Swede clasped fingers with him. Tino smiled reassuringly as he commented, “Just like old times, eh?” With a strong pull, Finland aided Sweden to his feet and watched him with careful violet eyes. He would have preferred to gently prod Berwald to his feet slowly and allow the tall man to ease himself back to his natural height, but paranoia caused Tino to rush. The Finn wanted that door blocked off ASAP, as monsters didn't wait for the nations to meander about and lazily prepare. No. They came fast and hard, without any mercy, like the one that chased and cornered him in this room. That had happened about fifteen minutes ago. It was likely that the massive cat still stalked the halls... the thought of it breaking through the door caused Tino's blood to run cold.
Another thing that added to Tino's worry-list was Berwald's face suddenly flushing. He had been so pale before from fainting, so why was colour painting his cheeks now? Had the Swede overexerted himself by standing to quickly? Was he not feeling well? “H-Hey, if you're not feeling well you don't have t-”
Berwald had already let go of Tino's palm and had quickly paced over to the bookcase that Tino had previously climbed. Tino sighed as he followed, continuing to allow that little seed of worry to grow and sprout within his conscience. Was it fair to ask Berwald of this task? Perhaps Tino could do it on his... well...no. Tino really couldn't move that structure on his own, even if he was at his normal strength. Granted, Tino packed a pretty good punch for someone his size, there were limitations to his manpower. He needed Berwald for this, and even with the strong man, this would be tough. Tino was being optimistic in hoping that they could move the shelf, but what if it was too much for the two of them? Not only was it heavy looking, but the two of them were at half strength and completely exhausted. To move that item across the room would certainly keep anything out... but the daunting mission to transport it would be taxing.
“This thing looks heavier than I first thought... Well, where there's a will, there's a way!” Tino piped, moving past Berwald to touch the dusted shelves. He knew what had to be done to lighten the load and would clean up his mess afterwards. Grabbing multiple books by the spines, Tino tossed the crinkled objects to the ground in small stacks. Without the contents of the self weighing it down, the two would be able to move it without any hitches.
Tino turned to explain his mental masterplan to Berwald when the Finn noticed the Swede looking at him. Well, he was probably confused as to why Tino was tossing encyclopedias to the ground. But... why was Sweden red again? He must not have been feeling well. “I'm sorry to ask you to exert yourself...” Tino apologized, assuming the sudden sickness was from Berwald's stubborn need to help the Fin when he should have been sleeping on a sofa. “Here. I'll take the books off the shelf so we can move it. Then when you sleep, I can put some of them back on,” Tino offered, tossing a few more hardcover copies onto the hardwood.

Bernwald flinched as he watched one of his closest friend casually toss the books on the floor with a smile on his face. It was truly painful to watch and he had to force himself not to visibly grimace, whether or not he succeeded a mystery to himself.
Carefully picking up a battered old book and placing it gently down on the ground, Bernwald felt a tug of familiarity and longing in his chest. The feeling of the worn cover between his fingers brought back memories of reading long into the night as everyone else slept soundly, dreaming sweet dreams that would cause a smile to come across their faces. Books were easy. Safe. They didn't judge or look at him with fear like the people he saw on the streets or even the other nations. No, they simply wanted to be read by someone who could appreciate the words inside.
Allowing a quiet hum of understanding rumble deep in his throat, Sweden continued pacing the books in careful stacks behind him next to the larger pile Finland had haphazardly made. Of course Finland's way made more sense considering their current predicament and objective but Sweden couldn't bring himself to throw the old things. Call it nostalgia for all those long hours of peaceful reading or just the foolish notion of respect for something inanimate that had weathered over time in a dusty bookcase, being neglected by all those who may have passed by, but he really didn't care.
Reaching up to pluck books from the higher shelves with ease, he swallowed the yawn already halfway out of his mouth as he picked up the voice of Finland speaking. What did he say? Something about books and taking off? Turning to look over his shoulder and down at the other nation, Bernwald said the only reasonable thing that drifted through his hazy mind.
"Why would y' take your cl'thes 'ff?

Tino took note, after he had already tossed books aside in a careless fashion, that the Swede across from him was carefully placing the objects in neat piles on the floor. 'Oh... oops' [/color] Tino thought shamefully as he brought his hand behind his head to nervously scratch his neck. He honestly meant no disrespect to the books themselves, but he had other things on his mind. Flicking his violet eyes to the door, Tino only hesitated for another second before resuming his task with a little more care. As Berwald took the books that towered at the top of the shelf, Tino ducked down to the level of the floorboards to pull books from their places, littering the floor with the rustic, dusted covers. Of course, Tino sort of had intentions of putting the books back in their original spots, but he couldn't be sure. He honestly wasn't too worried about making a filing error here. The books would live, even if they weren't sorted in alphabetical order. In fact, the covers were so dirtied that Tino couldn't even make out the authors or titles. Caught up in stripping the shelf naked of its accessories, Tino was completely taken aback by Berwald's comment. In fact, the statement bounced him off his feet. Literally. In the sudden motion to snap his neck upwards, he lost his loose footing and tumbled the few inches onto his bottom as his amethyst gaze stared in a combination of shock and horror at the man above. What was he to say to that? What could he even say? It was... so random! Tino hadn't discarded a single article of clothing. So why did Sweden unexpectedly comment on it? Did Berwald want him to take his clothes...off... The thought suddenly left Tino's face burning and his ears hot. Steam practically billowed up from his head as he swallowed, trying to figure out a way to actually say something. What should he do? Ignore the line? Continue ripping books from their resting place? Y-Yeah, that sounded like a good idea. Fumbling his fingers back to the shelf, he moved to clear the remainder of the bottom shelf as he quickly stuttered, “W-What are...? Are you cold? You can use my cloak... if you want... me to take it off...” Tino mumbled, cheeks glossed red as his sentence slowly pinched downward in volume. The Fin quickly stood, brushing himself off as he raised his embarrassed eyes to the taller Swede's. Could this conversation get any more awkward? [/blockquote]

Watching as Finland fell backwards, Bernwald quickly turned around to make sure he was alright. However, he rushed to take a long step back, the look he received striking guilt and panic into his heart, bringing long repressed memories flooding to the surface of his mind.
Betrayal. Fear. Panic. Hate.[/b] All of it. Surging through him, sharpening his thoughts to painful awareness. Swallowing thickly, Bernwald took quick, deep breaths to slow the agonizing pounding of his heart against his ribcage. Fighting against the rising bile in his throat that threatened to overwhelm him, he resisted the urge to get sick.
It took him a while to remind himself who he was, what he wasn't, before he noticed his companion's face. Why... why was he so red? Panic ripped through his chest like a bullet and flashed in his eyes. He knows. He hates me. He thinks I'm a monster.
"W-what are... are you cold? You can use my cloak... if you want... me to take it off..."
He visibly relaxed upon hearing Finland voice his question. Slowly reaching his hand up to rub his face, the Swede gave the faintest of smiles as a mere hint at his relief, "No. 'm good. Th'nk y' though."
After a minute or so of clarity he inwardly chuckled, his shoulders rising a few times, at how paranoid he was being. Granted, it was perfectly natural with all things considered. But this, this was Finland, Tino for God's sake. He'd known him practically forever. He knew everything about him, even the dirty secrets what would permanently ruin his reputation. Almost. There were monstrous secrets Bernwald kept to himself, secrets he was scared to acknowledge himself.
Derailing that locomotive of horror with a series of bombs, he turned his attention back to Finland's face. With the troubled look and that particular shade of red he looked like a teenager caught fooling around with a girl under the bleachers at a game..... On second thought maybe that was a bad likeness. It was times like these that made the selectively mute nation thank every god ever worshiped that he didn't suffer from word vomit like his Danish fr-comrade.
Not a second after thinking of the obnoxious blonde, the manifestation of Sweden felt a tidal wave of loneliness. Under any normal condition he would gladly beat the man within an inch of his life, right now however he only missed him. And of course with thoughts of Danmark in his kind, Norge came with them and Island followed not far behind.
Fond memories bloomed before withering into the corners of his mind. An overbearing laugh here, a rare smile there, even the smell of licorice. God how he missed his friends, his family.
Slouching in resignation at the thought of his family missing from his life, Bernwald did the only thing he could; he looked to the only thing he had left to protect. Tino.
Making a halting start before finally pushing himself forward, he wrapped his large arms around his oldest friend and held him for everything he was worth. He had finally found Tino and he wasn't ever losing him again." 'm so s'rry Tino." I've really m'ssed y'.

Tino honestly wasn't quite sure what Berwald had meant by his completely random statement, but any pointless thoughts that he held over the matter were simply forgotten as the Swede's expression transformed from that of sleepiness and relaxation to one filled to the brim with horror. The action lodged panic in Tino's mind while he stood, mentally freezing. Normally, Tino was quick to act and usually was very good at picking an action on impulse. That was in battle though, on the war field. In this case, Finland's mind and body went numb.
What was wrong?
Was it Tino? Was there something crawling up his body? Some monster? The Fin quickly snapped his gaze away, tearing to across his body and clothing in question. He found nothing, which was a wonderful relief, but the positive emotion didn't last. Why had his best friend suddenly looked so frightened on him? His eyes had been filled with terror and despair... Did he not believe that Tino was in fact Tino? Thankfully, Tino's response seemed to quell the apprehension in the ocean eyes of his friend as the man seemingly relaxed. This triggered a similar reaction in the smaller Nordic as Tino's rigid posture relaxed.
He also wouldn't outwardly admit that some of that relief came with the fact that Berwald hasn't asked him to strip. Grinning to try and mask his embarrassment, Tino curled his arms behind his back and clasped his clammy fingers together, giving his mind some sort of distraction.
"Aha! Alright! Don't be a stranger though if you need something, 'kay?"
Finland then noticed the mere twitch of a smile that brushed over his friend's expression, taking the edge off his usual stoic stare. This worried Tino, but not in the same sense as before. Instead, this was a more awkward worry that had spanned out over many generations. The general curiosity that plagued Tino whenever Berwald laughed, smiled or blushed without words. Tino was he kind of man who spoke his mind freely (perhaps too freely at times), while Berwald kept damn near everything to his silent self. Years melted into centuries, but Tino still didn't know exactly what went on in that spiky blond head.
Silence soon fell as Tino plucked the last leather bond book from the shelf, reaching up on his tip toes to pull it from its resting place. Plopping on the ground with the rest of its kind, Tino brushed his dusty fingers off on his cloak before looking back to the swede, ready to comment on the progress of their endeavors. Instead, when the violet hues of the Fin rose to meet the burly man's, Tino was left without words.
Berwald's eyes were like hot blue coals, smoldering with ferocious heat in his sockets. They were intense, unwavering and locked onto Tino with so much focus that it looked almost painful. Finland silently commanded himself to inquire upon Sweden's sudden need for something, but found his tongue mute. What was there to say? What things were going on inside that silent man with ocean in his eyes? Tino cocked his head ever so slightly, but found that he simply couldn't break the vivid stare that was locking his body as it was. Tino's pale violet eyes that had lost some of the joyous life that he had before entry to the Manor lingered on the Swede's, desperately trying to shed light on the questions that would never be asked, or the comments that would never be spoken.
Such tension was shattered in a single stride as Tino found himself encased by another, strong arms wrapping around his thin body as if he were a child. Tino blinked twice, the surprise showing clearly on his expression, but his face was buried in the soft shirt that covered the Swede's broad shoulder. The Fin's first and unconscious response was to grow rigid and tense up. The gesture was without warning, without planning, but Tino soon realized the earlier intensity behind Berwald's eyes. As warmth soon returned to Tino's body, he felt the muscles of the other tighten to pull him closer. Words, some that were finally uttered, filled the air with the weight of an apology. Why was Sweden sorry? There was nothing to be sorry for, aside from the fact that they were in his house. That was something that Tino wouldn't let the Swede blame himself for.
Slowly working his somewhat pinned arms out, he gently wrapped them around Berwald's torso and allowed himself to relax and feel relief and comfort from the gesture. "Hey, don't be sorry. There's nothing to apologize for... Okay?" Tino said quietly, his already soft tone slightly muffled by the cloth that he has buried his face in. He felt warm, safe, and closest to his home than he had ever been.
'I've missed you too...'

It felt like an eternity-- but in actuality was only a minute or so-- that Berwald stood there holding Finland to his chest. He even felt the sudden rigidness that seized control of his friend when he first enveloped him in the hug. But that only made Sweden hold him tighter. He couldn't afford to give him up, not now, not when he was right here standing with him in what could be considered the most awkwardly comforting hug ever to occur. But it was then that he felt it. The relaxing of muscles as Finland accepted the hug. And then the light touch of a pair of smaller arms as they wound around him. If there was any moment in his long life where Sweden, Konungariket Sverige, The Lion of Northern Europe, had ever felt his heart stop this would be it.
An unpleasant prickling worked its way into his eyes and it hardly took a second afterward for Berwald to realize that he was fighting back tears. After the complete and utter horrors of this monstrosity of a house undoubtedly put them all through, it was the simple gesture of returning a hug that had finally broken the giant Swede. Finland was still the same caring person he was before, the person you could turn to in a heartbeat and know without a doubt he would be there for you. And that alone brought such immeasurable joy to Sweden that the fight to keep the tears at bay was easily forgotten and they slid easily down his cheeks, blurring his vision.
"Hey, don't be sorry. There's nothing to apologize for... Okay?"
''Finland...... you really don't realize all I have to be sorry for....'
Taking in a shuddering breath, Sweden caught the faint smell of familiarity under the dirt and grime of the Manor. There was no physically possible way to describe this smell. It was repugnant to say the least, something Berwald had grown up with and came to love throughout the centuries. It was alcohol, dog, gunpowder, musk and ammonium chloride all in one. It was Fin- no. It was Tino, through and through. It was Tino and it was home. And that simple hint of something so easily overlooked made Berwald's resolve to protect his closest friend stronger than ever. He would die if it meant saving Finland.
Unwilling to break the physical contact but knowing that if he stayed like this-- holding Finland and having him hold him back-- he would fall asleep, Berwald finally slackened his arms and let them drop to his sides. Steeling himself and taking a step to the side, the sheer loneliness he felt almost crushed him into the ground. Berating himself as he turned his head to again watch Tino, he did something more out of place than his spontaneous hug.
He smiled.
Not the subtle upward twitch of his lips that was the best attempt he could make on a regular basis or the painful look of failure most assumed was a glare, grimace and scowl combined. No. This was an actual smile that everyone could form, just smaller in size. But it was there and he hadn't failed miserably as he normally did. The fact that he actually managed to do it could be constituted as a miracle or impending doom depending on how you looked at it. It decorated his face and managed soften his sharp features, even bringing uncharacteristic warmth to his tear flooded eyes.
Alas, all miracles come to an end. With his wondrous smile slipping from his face, Berwald pivoted to the bookcase and took up the position to push the massive thing. He tried desperately to look preoccupied with the grain of the wood but was incredibly unsuccessful, his face blazing like the suit Finland wore on Christmas to deliver presents.

Warmth...
Tino sighed as he pressed his forehead gently against the man's shoulder. He hadn't noticed it at first, but now it was so foreign, so strange... the sensation of feeling another person. Tino had been batted, bruised and bloodied along the halls, knocked around by Death's cold clutches before standing up for round two. He'd spent many hours curled up, desperate for life and the words of another nation. The embodiment of the Northern nation had always had a natural tolerance to the cold, but this was different. The chill of Death, or near death, had lodged itself in Tino's bones long ago and had never left him, no matter how much he shivered or tried to get warm. His flesh was everlasting ice that refused to melt.
Except now.
His skin tingled, prickling at the radiating heat that seemed to emanate off of the Swede. That conquering sensation that battled back the invisible grip that the Manor had encased the Fin in. Tino sighed silently, allowing the cool, white puff of air to pass through chapped lips. He could feel it. Deep in his chest, the stress and anxiety begin to uproot, their lodgings rattled by the presence of an ally. Berwald was alive. He was still on two feet with a heartbeat. Tino knew this, as he could feel the beating organ through the man's chest as he tightened his grip, pulling himself closer. In other times, Tino normally wasn't so clingy. In fact, it was the opposite, as there were multiple times where Berwald was the one who wouldn't let him go. Tino honestly missed that, hence the physical response to the unexpected hug.
It struck Tino now that he had taken advantage of Berwald in the past. Yes, he had been aware of the giant's affectionate actions... to deal with them, he had merely feigned ignorance instead of confronting the meaning behind the motions. Though, it took a while to figure out that the silent burly man liked his company, but Finland wasn't exactly sure what the man wanted from him. Tino wasn't wealthy, didn't have bountiful natural resources, nor was he really that strong. So why? After many many years, Tino lost track of the question and just accepted the fact that he had to deal with Berwald's strain notions. It was a dance that they had perfected over the ages, and the steps were lost to Tino at the moment. Instead, he didn't move. He just stood as he was, absorbing the warmth from the nation in front of him. The nation that reminded him of life that he still possessed in his Finnish body. They were still alive, and they were going to make it out of this alright.
Tino swallowed as he was suddenly released, the abrupt action leaving him cut off and feeling the bite of the cold air where a warm individual used to be. The notion left Tino feeling hollow and more alone than ever, after having someone familiar so close. Tino reached out, grabbing onto Berwald's sleeve as he tried to move away. The man stopped and slowly turned to face the Fin, wearing something that Tino hadn't seen in a long long time.
A smile. A true smile.
Tino froze, unable to really do anything. That was a gesture that rarely... no, that was a poor analogy. Rare wasn't the word to describe the facial gesture. It was something that perhaps showed ever dozen centuries, if that. Swallowing thickly, Tino didn't even know what to say. Not only was the Swede's face pulled into one of the most genuine, perfect smile, but there were lingering tear tracks on his pale cheeks and a slight red tinge to his ocean eyes. He had been crying.
It physically hurt. Like a blade slowly being pushed into Tino's chest, millimetre by agonizing millimetre. The sight of this heart touching, one-of-a-kind smile in such a corrupt place, mixed with salty tears and pain... And Tino could do nothing to fix it. He knew not the way out, nor how to navigate the ever-changing halls. He was useless... Swallowing once more, his violet gaze disconnected from the ocean one was the Swede turned from him and moved back to the bookcase. Tino took a moment to collect his bearings as he wiped his eyes. Berwald must have had some dust on his shirt... that's why... his eyes had gotten a little watery. Coughing, Tino followed the lead of the Nordic before him as he moved to the shelf, grabbing hold of one of the wooden braces as he heaved upward. Tino was strong, despite his stature. In fact, the saying 'don't judge a book by it's cover' applied quite well to Tino's strength. Once grasping onto the wooden structure and lifting, Tino almost stutter stepped backwards the the massive bookcase lurked his way as he frantically backpedaled until they neared the door. “E-Easy now...” Tino warned as he turned slightly, edging himself towards the handle. He didn't want to get squashed between the metaphorical rock and a hard place (or in this case, a heavy-ass bookcase and a thick wooden door).
