He had never been so relieved to step outside on a cold night. The wind that whistled through hollow trees and lapped at windows was not an inviting thing to most, but Ivan did not pay much mind to the eerie atmosphere. It wasn't very welcoming, but it didn't turn him away either. It was like what he grew used to back at home during winters - there were always daunting sounds like that. The cold was the worst part of it, and it didn't help that everything else in winter was often unreasonably lonesome and nightmare inducing - what he had experienced of it, anyway.
Though it was much different here, because this was not his home. As much as he missed being home right now, it felt oddly safer to be somewhere else for once. Winter at home had caused him so much trouble that it was rather nice to be away from it; if only just for a while. Or however long this stay at the Manor would last. It seemed no one at all had found any luck on a way out.
He could remember wandering out of the Manor to the outside skirts once or twice before, but he hadn't ever found the chance to search its entire area. There must have been a few things he'd missed the last couple of times. New things were always exciting to find, especially in a place like this; inside or outside. He knew now to stay away from the hill, which he had once found at the far end of one path leading away from the Manor. That seemed so long ago that he probably would not remember how to get there, anyway.
The path he took was different, and it lead to an area much closer to the Manor's outer walls. Gates were enclosed around the courtyard area, which displayed proudly several structures of stone and moss-covered statues. He pushed the entrance gates carefully open, unintentionally bringing about the sound of creaking metal; unable to tell how far in range that noise had reached. That was something he quickly moved on from, delving further into the area to come upon something unexpected.
It wasn't as lively as he would have liked to see, but it was indeed a garden. Of course, a Manor as beautiful as this one had to have a garden to boot. The flowers probably had not been too well treated by sunlight, but they had received an overpowering amount of water after that last rainfall. Most of them had been flattened by its weight, though others still managed to stay upright. They added a nice touch of color to the dull outside, he thought. Though of course, that's what he'd think about flowers in any situation.
The sight of them calmed him immediately. Not that he quite needed to be calmed, but that effect was inevitable. He strolled through to observe the greenery that passed by on either side of him, swaying and nodding with the breeze that blew through. After that flood, it was unlikely that anyone would want to venture out into the cold after having been soaked - but it seemed he was not the only one who defied that. He stopped only when he noticed another figure standing out here in the garden, just a little ways away from him. Recognition of who it was had his heart leap.
"...Sofia?" he said in a rush of breath, unable to stop that name from slipping. The flowers were momentarily forgotten as his attention shifted entirely onto his sister, hoping more than anything that her vision was true and that she would turn and be happy to see him.
