You’ve grown soft Kiku. He knew that more than anyone. Time after time, the Asian continued to open his heart for others, an open invitation to waltz right on in and make yourself at home for a few days before ripping it out and throwing it to the ground. An opening to him. Why? It's not as though the others were anything special. The only people he'd grown mildly close to were America, Taiwan but she was family...and possibly Germany and Italy, and while he enjoyed their company in those few short moments, Japan realized he made a grave error. By doing so he opened his heart to them. These people were just ink on paper yet here was, allowing some of them to grow beyond that and obtain a piece of his heart. That was mistake number one.So what? What was so wrong with that? They were nations who knew no limit when it came to their life span, some faded into history and others remained to keep etching their name into it. China was a fine example. Eternity seemed lonely when you had no one to share it with so was giving a few pieces of his heart out truly that bad? Wasn't he over-exaggerating as he always did? Kiku may not be the kind of person to jump to conclusions, but once one was made after rationally thinking through and ruling out any other possibilities there were times he acted on impulse and emotional attachment rather than the facts presented. They don’t need K i k u. Why not step back and rest for awhile?
Because if he did that, if he did that then…”Kiku” would--would be locked away. Any sense of human emotions he held would be locked away and the longer he remained that way the closer he came to becoming Japan. Not Kiku...Japan. The nation who cared for little but himself and his own goals. He'd help his allies only if it benefited him in the end, and that was something he didn't want to see happen. Not in a place like this. No. They don’t need y o u. "Damare!"[/color] The words left his mouth before he could stop them, face contorting with a mixture of anger and horror, hand raising to his mouth as if it would take back everything he thought in that moment. What was wrong with him? Perhaps he'd spent a longer time within the Manor than he first thought, time was nearly impossible to keep track of in this place and with everything he'd seen--it must've been stress. Yes, that's all it was. While the roof wasn't necessarily freedom it provided him him with fresh air, and that was something he needed. A moment to take a breather and collect his thoughts, think rationally and come up with the best way to handle their situation. For a moment, it felt as though he could forget everything and be taken in by the landscape, had it not been for the Manor's current condition Japan didn't doubt this place would be beautiful. Amazing even. He could only imagine what it looked like before devils made it their home and tainted its ground and walls with their mischief and blood of the innocent. ....The blood of those who'd come before. Well wasn't that a charming thought. Shaking his head the Asian allowed a small sigh to escape him as he moved over to the ledge, staring down at the grounds below. Finding this place had been an accident. He'd been roaming about in the attic trying to find a new weapon to replace the now melted sword. Wandering this place without one, well, he may as well just hold a sign saying 'free meal' for any ghoul or creature he may happen across next. It was his own mistake in engaging the beast and now he was paying the price, his own pride had taken over in that moment and it cost him. He held no hatred for the creature, more like, he was angry with himself. Instead of a weapon he nearly tripped on a rusted ladder, still a little sturdy which surprised him. What drove him was a curiousity that could not be quenched, and so he climbed and climbed until reaching the top to come to the point he was now. How nice of this place to leave such a spot open to any it trapped inside. Giving it's victims a sense of release if they jumped. For a moment he found himself wondering just how many had jumped from here over the years, falling freely while being wrapped in the wind;s embrace before hitting the cold, unforgiving ground. The cracking of bones breaking the silence for a moment before it returned to reclaim it's hold of the grounds. It was a depressing thought. The wind that ran through here was one's only comfort but perhaps it was also the seductress that led so many to that conclusion. Being left alone with nothing but the crisp air and your thoughts could drive anyone insane, he was proving to be a fine example. But no he would not jump, he couldn't. There were so many people he'd yet to see, Greece, Taiwan, Italy--even Germany! How were they? Was England fairing alright? Their encounter had been brief, but a huge relief to the Asian. Had it not been for Arthur he'd be a pile of ashes right now. Best not to think on that. Best not think on anything for the time being, not with his thoughts being so jumbled. Especially with the earlier incident still haunting him. "Even with everyone fighting and in danger I seem to get distracted, it must be my old age. I'm sure Yao would have a thing or two to say about this even Germany-san would be amazed. I wonder how they are, have they gotten enough sleep? Enough food? I do hope everyone's alright."For now hope was all he had.

Romano could never really remember the circumstances that led him to the attic. He just remembered feeling very, very numb. Numb? Dead was a better word for it. He felt dead, and so very alone.
Alone again, he thought to himself frequently as he wandered the halls. But was there ever a time he was not alone? Better question: was he so sure he really has been alone this entire time?
He could hear them: growling in the walls, whispering from behind closed doors. He used to jump at such sounds. He used to wail and cry out for Spain, holding himself when there was no one to hold him. But Spain wasn't there. It was just Romano, and the noises of the mansion. They were incessant, penetrating, chipping away at him piece by piece until he was reduced to a trembling, sobbing mess (there was nobody around to see him cry, so he allowed himself the luxury).
So why was he now back on his feet, listlessly wandering the place that sent chills down his spine, making his blood run cold? It wasn't so much that he had gotten over his fear; more it was that his fear had grown so intense, it chased his very self to the far reaches of his consciousness. He was hollow, an empty shell more dead than the spirits that undoubtably roamed the very halls he occupied. Any wisp of thought he might have had was immediately swallowed by the bone-chilling muttering of the manor itself.
Somehow or other, he found himself in the attic, climbing up toward the roof. Perhaps it was by coincidence, the noises that plagued him chasing him further and further up until there was no escape. Or perhaps some small part of his mind still hoped to find a familiar face in this godforsaken place, and the best way of doing so was to begin a search from top to bottom. Or, probably the most likely, his subconscious had led him here to complete the process that began with his spiritual death, sending his soulless body over the edge so his life could leave him as well. Regardless of the reason, he couldn't quite climb onto the rooftop just yet; no, first he had to meet a rather shocking sight.
He found a body! A human body on the roof! For some reason, it never occurred to him to think whether it was alive or not, a fellow nation or stranger. All he knew was that this meant, at least at some point, that he wasn't completely alone. He felt a small beam of hope light up within him. Unfortunately, along with that hope, came the paralyzing terror he had shoved to the back of his mind. His fingers slipped, and he lost his grip on the ladder. And then he screamed.
He couldn't remember the last time he heard his own voice. After a time, he had decided there was no point in saying anything if no one could hear him. And with that admittedly girly scream, he could feel himself waking up. He was Romano, not some lonely ghost haunting the mansion. He was Lovino Vargas, and he was terrified.
In his panic, his flailing arms managed to grab the ladder once again. He was certainly not letting go this time, his knuckles turning white from gripping so tightly. Who was up there? He wondered if he should try talking to whoever it was. Did he even remember how to talk? What if his vocabulary had left him? Collecting a few shaky breaths, he was able to recall a few of his favorite words.
"B-bashtur…!" he moaned, slurring his words as he got used to using his mouth again. "Y'fuckin' scared the shit out of me! Who the fuck are you?" His words became more distinct as he went on, but his voice remained the same: shaky, unsure, sounding more whiny than angry. Spitting at the ground below, he muttered as an afterthought: "Vaffanculo!"

"Y'fuckin' scared the shit out of me! Who the fuck are you?"
In that instant, those twelve words were more than enough to snap the Japanese nation from his death ridden mind, chocolate orbs widening in surprise as his mouth formed a slight 'o' shape. Turning on his heels, catching sight of the owner of the unexpected voice with ease, Japan felt his brow quirk in slight amusement. He scared him, shouldn't that be the other way around seeing as he'd been up here first before this man suddenly came and started screaming at him. Honestly, talk about a jump scare. Had it been anyone else they may have fallen to an untimely end. Removing himself from further thoughts on that particular subject, he instead decided to focus on the accent, and; what he assumed to be curse words leaving his new arrival. It was European, that much was obvious, and even though it wasn't the usual high-pitched, cheerful tone; Japan recognized Italian when he heard it. This wasn't Feliciano, so the only other option was--
"Hello, Lovino-san."
The words came out in a soothing tone, not wanting to cause the other any further panic. He even stayed back, kept his hands in front of him and in the line of the Italian's sight so he wouldn't accuse the man of drawing a weapon on him...not that he had one with his sword the way it was. Aah, he had really messed up with that fire demon and now he was paying the price, not that he was about to go and cry over spilt milk. At least not in the open, not with company. Pushing the usual smile to his face, he gave a bow in greeting even though it was a tad late for it. "It's nice to finally meet you, though we've never been introduced before now, I am Japan." No need for the temperamental nation to introduce himself seeing as Kiku was well informed on who he was. Mainly from stories that Italy and Germany had been willing to share, needless to say he'd always held an interest in meeting the man--and now he had. The world truly was a strange place. "I wish you and I were meeting under better circumstances, though, it doesn't seem as though we'll be blessed with such a fortune. Now, would you like some help off the ladder or..." The world trailed off, mainly because he wasn't sure if his help was needed or if the male had simply lost his strength for a moment after being surprised.
Not wishing to wait longer than needed too, still making sure his movements were calm and carefully planned out while being mindful of the dangers that lurked below. The last thing either of them needed was the thought of Romano being dragged back into the house, the mere image of such an incident happening...Kiku wasn't sure how he'd react. Or how he'd go about handling it. Reaching his hand out for the other to grab onto, his eyes remained more locked in the darkness below for any sign of movement while his ears listened for anything from the roof itself. They'd be between a rock and a hard place if either of the two happened, and he didn't much like the idea of watching someone be taken right in front of him. No, while he was out and about, should he ever come across one of their own; Japan would try to ensure their safety until they parted ways. Afterwards it was up to the individual to remain safe, that didn't mean he never worried about them. He always did. Turkey and Austria, how were the two of them fairing? England...was he still doing alright? 'Focus Japan, you need to stay focused on those in front of you..'
"You don't look like you've gained any injuries," physical anyways, "still, you should rest up here awhile. Even if it's only for a moment, the short break will do you and your body some good." As well as his psyche, but he couldn't hold that against Romano. He may have seen things Japan would never be able to imagine, at least not in that moment.

"Hello, Lovino-san."
Romano felt his throat tighten. The stranger knew his name! But how? He couldn't recognize the voice. He peered onto the roof to see the small man looking back at him.
"It's nice to finally meet you, though we've never been introduced before now, I am Japan."
Japan? "Asians…fucking Asians everywhere…" he muttered under his breath. But this particular Asian's voice was intensely soothing. He could feel the muscles in his face relax as his anger and fear dissipated, yet at the same time, it worried him. He wasn't sure if he wanted to relax, and this kind of calm felt more or less forced. He eyed the man suspiciously as he made some formal speech about "meeting under better circumstances," but at the mention of leaving his ladder, Romano tightened his grip. He had nearly fallen off once, and certainly wasn't going to let it happen again. In fact, he was scared to make any movement in either direction. But even he knew he couldn't cling to the ladder forever, and Japan was so kind as to offer a hand in assistance. He cocked his head from side to side, as though weighing in his other options, then ever hesitantly, removed a hand from the rung and clasped the Asian's wrist, allowing him to pull him onto the roof.
The first thing he noticed when his shoes gripped the shingles was how very high he was. The cool breeze tickled his hair, and the overall feeling of being far above ground was breathtaking. Romano was overcome with dizziness, and held onto Japan's arm a little longer than expected while he waited for his breath to come back to him.
"You don't look like you've gained any injuries," his new companion commented. Romano didn't reply, still taking in the view of the horizon. "Still, you should rest up here awhile…"
He didn't want to rest. He felt like he had just woken up from a nightmare, only the nightmare continued even after he opened his eyes. He couldn't rest now. He shook his head, both in reply to Japan's suggestion and in an effort to clear his thoughts. Fixing his gaze on the small man before him, he furrowed his brow.
"You're…you're Veneziano's friend, right?" Yes, he could remember. Whenever his brother talked to him, it was usually about Germany. But he had often mentioned Japan as a third companion to his group of friends. "You…haven't seen him, have you?" In nothing less than carelessness, he let slip a worried look. He was still trying to sort out his thoughts (what had he been up to as he wandered those halls?), but he was positive he had at some point tried to locate his brother. Alas, it was to no avail. He hadn't seen Veneziano in so long… But here was one of his brother's closest friends! Surely he… Romano's visage was hopeful as he chewed his lower lip in anticipation for an answer.
